Carol Ann Duffy

Carol Ann Duffy (born 23 December 1955, Glasgow) is a poet, playwright, and freelance writer, who currently holds the position of Britain's poet laureate. She is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at the Manchester Metropolitan University and Creative Director of the Manchester Writing School, based in the university's Department of en. She was awarded an OBE in 1995, and a CBE in 2002.Duffy succeeded Andrew Motion as poet laureate on 1 May 2009. She is the first woman and the first openly bisexual person to hold the position, as well as the first laureate to be chosen in the 21st century. Moreover, Duffy has been described as the first Scottish poet laureate, with Peter Forbes arguing in The Independent that Duffy's success is part of a renaissance in Scottish poetry.
